Listing Of Parrot Rescues: We Need Your Input!

I hope that no one reading this blog might be thinking: “It’s about time! I can finally unload this horrible bird!” Sadly, even with all the information on this site that teaches you how to work on your bird problems, helping you to be in the right frame of mind to do so, there will still be those who need these services. It is an unfortunate truth that a list like this is necessary.

I know that many people got their birds without realizing just how dificult a human/bird relationship can be. Some have said they felt downright misled when they bought their bird. Just the same, you made the decision to bring a bird into your home and here you are. Its welfare is your responsibility. As a human being, you owe it to this bird, as to any pet, to try to make things right. I would like to think that we would all go to the ends of the earth to keep our birds.

There are those looking to relinquish their birds who won’t find what it takes to bother trying to make it work, and there are those who can’t keep their birds because of life changes, ill health, or for financial reasons. This list is intended for those in that last resort scenario:

Keep in mind that many of these rescues are packed to the rafters with unwanted birds, and most survive solely by volunteer support and donation. It is preferred that your donations do not have wings. Please feel free to contribute financially to any of these organizations, and if you live in the area, most are in need of volunteer workers. They are all responsible establishments run by wonderful people who work hard for birds. They need our help.

Also, the rescues listed above are in no particular order. It is an incomplete list. I would greatly appreciate your recommendations for rescues that your know of personally so that we are able to list as many choices as possible. For those of you outside the US, I would especially appreciate your input.  Please read the list of criteria we are using to judge the reputability of each facility:

  • The facility is clean and operated by knowledgeable caretakers. Birds are fed a healthy diet, enriched and rehabbed to increase the likelihood that placement will be permanent.
  • They have a stringent screening process for potential new homes.
  • They have an education program in place for new owners.
  • They do not “sell” birds for profit (or promote the pet industry).
  • They are not breeders and do not encourage breeding.
  • They are not hoarders and actively look for placement unless a bird is determined to be unsuitable for re-homing.
  • They do not exceed their spacial or financial limitations when accepting new birds and will close their doors when limits have been reached.

If you know of a place that maintains these standards, please comment below so that we can look into it and add it to this list. Thanks for your help.

Author Patty Jourgensen specializes in avian health, behavior and nutrition and has been working with and caring for rescue birds since 1987.

Take in Dogs, Cats, Horses, Reptiles, Birds Mostly dog rescue but have housed all of the above. Currently have two rescued Blue and Gold Macaws that were kept outside in a cage on the ground like chickens and lived in filth and horrible shelter.. Actively adopt out dogs cats and horses. Rehab birds(pigeons, doves, song birds) and abandoned bird babies and release when able back into the wild. Can take in Parrots and smaller birds on an emergency basis. Would require the owner surrender to also give the cage along with the bird if they are surrendering a large bird, and a small surrender fee to cover initial vet fee if the bird is not in good health, and to cover any initial supplies needed for the bird. Located near Boise Idaho with fosters in california. Petfinder shelter ID is ca1332 for the calif based rescue and fosters, and owner resides in Idaho.

lori

I am the owner of Lori’s Amazing Pets in Hiram GA, I hope you read this, as far as I am a pet store, and I got my start of opening my business per Rescue birds, My store is VERY different from others because I will not sell a bird if I do not think that the person is right for the bird, I ask my customers to spend at least an hour a day with me and the bird they are interested in for at least 30 days so I my ask questions, I can tell a person right away if the bird they want will be taken care of, some of my customers get really mad at me cause I will not sell birds to them, I let them know right off hand the good the bad and the ugly of all birds, I just want to make sure these babies are in the best care possible. My husband had me an avairy built onto my home because some birds are just dont need to be put back out into a stressful place so they make their home with me, they fly around and play like they should, but they just dont seem to like other people, they are my special birds!!! I hope and pray one day we will not need to have a rescue center, but until then I will continue to educate and rescue and rehab birds , I am 38 yrs old and have no children, my life is dedicated to these birds, I love them all, we have blue&golds amazons, major mitchell, military, jardeens, ecletus, greys, cockatoo’s, I just love them all !!!!
