BirdTricks Tuesdays: How to Properly Socialize Your Parrot to Other Parrots, Other Pets & People

STOP! In the name of love… just kidding. What a great screen capture for our video (laugh).

Here is our very FIRST BirdTricks Tuesday video for you! We are so excited. PLEASE, give us feedback on what you like, didn’t like, want more of, want less of and of course… keep sending in your questions to us via facebook and email (info@birdtricks.com).

Our goal with these Tuesday videos is not only to answer your questions but also to help you learn something, inspire you to try something new and positive with your parrot at home and to make you feel like you get to know us a little bit better every time, too. We love sharing our lives with you guys so any and all feedback as we try this new series is appreciated. It’s something that will continue to evolve as we go.

I would try the conversion recipes in the cookbook to work your bird’s way up to eating the birdtricks diet. www.birdtricks.com/naturalfeeding :)

We will address this in a video, but for now, muffle the sound in your pocket or use a snapple cap.

We will definitely do a screaming video in the next few weeks. We’ve gotten so many questions that we are doing a topic per week and trying to cover as many as possible, and screaming is definitely on a back log!

Loved how you guys emphasized the importance of varying training for the birds involved aka timid vrs aggressive birds. My question is how much vocalization can you expect from your birds – cockatiels in particular? I recently moved from a house to an apartment and they seem to be a lot louder now … I am not sure if this is because I just moved and they are getting use to the new place or if they were always this loud but I didn’t notice as much when they were in the house. I don’t want to hinder them but I don’t want to annoy my new neighbours either ….

Thank you for the info on socialising with the clicker. My Sulphur loves me, hates Hubby. He will take treats from him and then turn. We will start clicking the calm behaviour. At the moment he so does the pinning death stare at hubby when he enters the room and I have to limit his out of cage time because he goes on the attack

Happy On Queue was my huge take-a-way. Love. LOVE, LOVE the video. Really wasnt too long at all — it was just right. Your daughter is THE most ADORABLE CHILD! What great lifestyle to experience. Thanks for all the lessons and fun style of learning.

Really enjoyed your video…thanks for sharing your life with us! For some reason I’m just now seeing it. No matter. Socializing is great for my 38 yr old yellow nape I raised from a baby. My Gray, who I got at about 5 (she is now about 15), is not as easy ( at least not for me). She is fine with my husband, but is pretty leery of every one else. My roommate readily shows off her scare where Greta took about a huge chunk of her arm some years ago. That information does not comfort anyone! Greta seems fine, then suddenly turns and nails the person, so it is hard for me to even ask anyone to try to socialize with her. Any suggestions? She is touch trained, but no one will trust her (rightfully so!) to treat. I like the idea of me treating her…I’ll certainly try that.

It looks on the video that your birds don’t sleep… Nice video… About socialize birds, I was wondering if you should do the same thing for birds with eggs… My male bird become violent and afried of me if I get close to the cage where the eggs are. I really don’t master when to remove the eggs and how to do it that they will not be sad.

I think it’s great that you guys really care about the birds and are willing to help us enjoy ours. There is so much to learn about their behaviors, but I am getting better at it. I have trained my blue and gold to do many of the tricks and am starting to do the harness training, so any info on that would be great! Also where can I get a reasonably priced bicycle for Rocky to ride? I can’t think of the lady you guys referenced right now, but I bought a scooter from her, but the guy he had make them for her is no longer available. Thank you so much for everything.

Thank you so much for the video! I look forward to watching them, as a matter of fact on Tuesday I kept checking my email for it!!! Happy even if it’s a day late! Haha. Your videos always inspire me to try something new or just serve as a “reminder” like “hey, you didn’t do any training yesterday”! So I thank you for that also!! You both are very informative and knowledgable, and the bird community definitely grows stronger and more dedicated with each video , blog, etc! Ok, well at least I DO! On your next video I would love to hear how your “date night” went!!! Yay ????

I am a happy new Senegal – baby owner. She is timid and careful and I try to be respectful, gentle and at the same time progress in training her. She is parent fed – and I am basically the first who has handled her. I have watched so many “one-day-training-clips” I thought I was doing something or all of it wrong – until you said: You have to reward a timid bird differently than a bird that isn’t afraid. THANK YOU. I knew it – sort of, I just didn’t know I knew it LOL :) I have had her for a week and I started training her after 3 days. She will go on a stick on my command if she is out of the cage – and I have just managed to get my hands close enough to give her treats and veggies. She was only used to parrotmix food (nuts and seeds) and apple. I have introduced her to herbs, tomato, etc – and she loved my blender veggie mix which I got to hand feed to her. YAY. :) It was so nice to see a different approach from a bird to my fingers. My lovebird hates fingers – and is crazy after she was refused access to the drawer we keep our cutlery in. Sudden change from I kinda doesn’t like fingers to devil bird who eats em. My lovebird training atm is only – hands on the cage, cus she (?? no dna test) will attack any finger or hand near her cage. Tnx for the vids. :)
