Meet Eleanor Roman

As BirdTricks has grown, we have had the privilege of working with many dedicated bird owners who are eager to learn and improve. Every so often, someone stands out not just for their commitment, but for their natural ability to observe, adapt, and truly understand the animals they work with. Eleanor is one of those people.

Many of you may recognize Eleanor as our youngest student ever to graduate from our freeflight program. What began as a passion for learning quickly turned into years of hands-on experience, growth, and dedication. Today, she continues her journey with BirdTricks as our Associate Freeflight Trainer, while also offering these online general behavior and training consultations to help others build better relationships with their birds.

A Brief History

Eleanor has spent most of her life surrounded by animals and nature, growing up in northern Idaho with a home full of birds, dogs, and horses. Her passion for animals began early and has developed into a strong focus on understanding behavior, building trust, and exploring what animals are capable of through training.

She has always been drawn to problem solving and observation, approaching each situation with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to adapt. Rather than forcing outcomes, she focuses on understanding the individual animal and creating a path forward that works for both the bird and the owner.

Eleanor is passionate about helping others see their birds as intelligent, capable individuals and guiding them toward long-term success through clear communication and thoughtful training.

Meet The Flock

Sam - Blue and Gold Macaw (2004)
Calm and steady, Sam taught Eleanor the importance of patience, timing, and truly observing a bird’s individual needs. Without Sam, Eleanor would not be the trainer she is today.

Frankie - Green Cheek Conure (2019)
A blend of fire and ice, Frankie came to Eleanor after passing through five previous homes. She is a spirited and often challenging bird, but working with her has taught Eleanor how to navigate hormonal behavior, handling-related aggression, and, above all, how to have patience and more empathy while building trust with a bird carrying significant past trauma.

Althea - Blue-throated Macaw (2022)
Althea is gentle and eager to learn, showing how trust and consistency create a confident, motivated, and engaged bird.

Vinny - Blue-throated Macaw (2026)
Energetic and full of personality, Vinny is the newest addition to the flock. He keeps training dynamic and challenges Eleanor to continue refining her approach with high-drive birds.

Consulting With Eleanor

Eleanor offers guidance across a wide range of foundational and advanced training topics, with a focus on understanding behavior at its core and building clear, effective communication between you and your bird. Her goal is to leave both you and your bird feeling more confident, capable, and connected while helping you build a relationship that continues to grow over time.

• Understanding and resolving behavior problems by addressing the root cause
• Building strong foundations including diet, routine, sleep, and enrichment
• Handling concerns such as fear, avoidance, or over-attachment
• Cooperative care including voluntary handling, nail trims, and day-to-day management
• Creating enrichment and environments that encourage natural behaviors
• Keeping birds motivated and engaged during training
• Teaching new skills and behaviors through clear, structured steps
• Working through inconsistency or lack of reliability in trained behaviors
• Supporting high-energy or expressive birds
• Introducing new toys, skills, or changes in a way that builds confidence
• Helping owners create long-term plans for success

• Anything that could be considered medical advice, which should be discussed with your avian vet
• Anything involving breeding, hand feeding, or selling birds
• Anything regarding outdoor freeflight*

*While Eleanor is a freeflight trainer with us, these online consultations are focused on general behavior, foundations, and relationship building. For those interested in outdoor freeflight, that training is offered separately through our Freestyle Flyers Club program.
