Remembering Toeksie, My Sun Conure

Toeksie

Toeksie

Okay so this probably won’t be the easiest post to write, can’t say I’m all that excited about this one but thought it was about time that I write a little something about Toeksie my female Sun Conure. She came into my life two years ago somewhat unexpectedly. January 28th, 2013 I went to a local pet store to kill some time while waiting for a friend, I wasn’t looking to buy…well, anything really. I already scheduled ...

Safe Edible Flowers For Parrots

Flowers are not usually on the grocery list when we are shopping for our birds. It's no wonder because they don’t have a lot of nutritional value. However, through the ages both humans and animals have utilized flowers as remedies for what ails them.

Similar to tea ingredients, flowers have properties that assist with problems ranging from bladder infections to skin rashes, from bruises to nausea and from pretty much everything in between. In fact, flower parts ... Save

My Thoughts On “Shouldering” Birds

Pepper

Female Eclectus, “Pepper”

Don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly fond of what we call “shoulder birds”. Ironically I was always the one carrying/allowing birds on my shoulders. At first I didn’t see a problem with it, when I first got Toeksie, she was terrified of my hands and would only climb onto my shoulder. I used that to my advantage. Is It Possible To “Normalise” A Bird Person’s House?

DSCF5809

The: “What will happen if I swing this blind’s pole into the glass door?” expression.

I’m moving house. I’m staying in the same state but flipping over to the other side – so a few hours from where I am now. Suddenly I find myself preparing my existing house for “normal people” to rent. It has come as a little bit of a shock for me to take off my “bird person” glasses and try to look at my home objectively without thinking about ...

A Day In The Life Of A Parrot Rescue Worker

Ever volunteered at a parrot rescue centre? Want to? Well, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like, this is how my days there usually go.

Fridays are our busiest day of the week, it is called “clean up Friday” after all. Now I usually arrive around 7am, Dee (owner of Brainy Birds) and I sit down for some morning tea before heading into the craziness! First things first, take all the birds in the “big bird room” (the room where most of our big birds sleep) out of their cages so that some of our dedicated volunteers can start cleaning ...
