How to Protect Your Birds From Theft and What to do if it Happens

Camelot Macaw

This was post was prompted by an attempted break in at Chet’s house recently.  Fortunately, the alarm at his house, among other things, thwarted the attempt.  I’d love to blame these things on the economy and desperate people, but sadly, the fact is that it has always been a problem, regardless of the times.  We have birds, many of them expensive, and people who are aware of this fact might try to steal and resell them on the streets for a fast buck.  I compiled a list of tips ...

Fresh vs. Frozen vs. Canned Veggies and Fruits

Q:  With the economic times being as they are, we can’t afford organic veggies.  Is it okay to serve our birds regular produce?

A:  Times are tough.  We are all tightening our belts and following our budgets to the letter.  When it comes to our bird’s diets, it’s important that we do the very best we can, everyday.  The most important thing is that we keep the veggies coming, in whatever form is the most affordable and practical for our budget.

Cressi the African Grey Parrot Joins Illuscination!

Congo African Grey Parrot

Ever since touring on the road Dave and I have worked hard to get more and more of our birds into the show that didn’t start out in it when we opened. Why Are Birds So Wasteful With Their Food?

Military Macaw, Camelot macaws

I watched in amazement as Linus, my umbrella cockatoo, picked through his food bowl, tossing to the ground everything that wasn’t that exact piece of food he was after.  Because of it’s design, Linus’s is the only cage that I keep the grate in.  That means that all of that food he was flinging was falling to the cage bottom, and out of his reach.  What was he thinking?  Certainly he knows from experience that he would be hungry for these pieces of food later in ...

How to Make a Climbing Net For Your Parrot

They go by many names: climbing net, play net, parrot hammock, rope gym and others. Whatever you wish to call them, they are a fantastic addition to your bird’s play area. The only problem with them is that they will set you back about $75-$150 depending on the size. You can find the one pictured here.  They are so easy to make, however, that you don’t need to shell out that kind of cash.

Find a good rope company, and buy in bulk, ...

Ways to Sneak Good Foods Into Your Picky Eater’s Diet

Congo African Grey Parrot

Some of my flock have great, healthy appetites.  Some, not so much. We have to come up with some pretty clever ways to outsmart the picky eaters for their own good. Determine what your parrot’s favorite foods are, and then make some variations to the recipe.

*Remember, be very sneaky!  Cut the veggies very small and use them sparingly at first.  In this battle to good health, you are using his favorite foods as coercion.  You don’t want him to get suspicious and walk away from them. His ...
